University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos bets Janus Dumaran and
Neil Majillano dispatched two rivals yesterday to reach the Boracay
phase of the 10th Nestea Beach Volley Championships.
But three Bacolod teams, including two from the University
of St. La Salle were showed the door, after dropping its assignments
at the La Salle Greenhills sand courts in Manila.
Showing more cohesion under stifling conditions, Dumaran and
Majillano ousted Iloilo Doctor's College, 25-20, before smashing
Foundation University, 25-21, for their fourth straight stint in
the national semifinals.
With the victories, the Recoletos pair completed a three-game
sweep of the Visayas eliminations at the La Salle Greenhills Sandcourts
in San Juan Manila. The UNO-R duo also defeated University of San
Agustin-Iloilo, 25-17, Tuesday.
"Dumaran and Majillano did not expect to make it this time
because of the very tough field," UNO-R coach Jason Delmo, whose
wards placed fifth in the Boracay phase last year, told the DAILY
STAR.
. "But they both deserved these victories because they worked
really hard for it," he added.
It was a different story though for the UNO-R volleybelles,
and the men and women's teams of USLS.
Recoletos lady spikers Christine Dioso and Jenny Torres demolished
University of San Carlos, 25-9, in the morning, only to be ousted
from the tournament after losing to University of San Jose Recoletos,
18-25.
After scoring two victories against its first two assignments
Tuesday, the men's squad of USLS, composed of Mark Sabusap and Marlon
Luces, suffered setbacks against different rivals that led to its
elimination.
The La Sallians absorbed a 20-25 loss against USJR in the
morning game, before enduring a heartbreaking 23-25 setback at the
hands of University of Southern Philippines Foundation.
In the women's side, Ola Lopez and Danilyn Lequigan were defeated
by USC, 21-25, yesterday paving the way for its exit.
National champion Southwestern University failed to get past
the Visayas eliminations and was denied a shot at a fourth straight
women's crown losing to USP, 25-15,
Advancing to the national semis and finals on May 4 to 6 are
San Agustin, UV, USP and University of San Jose Recoletos in the
women's division.
Joining UNO-R in Boracay are USJR, University of San Carlos
and Foundation University.
Drawing the attention yesterday was the women's pair from
University of San Agustin. which defeated Foundation, 25-23, and
became the first team to advance with a perfect 3-0 record.
Luzon teams already assured of slots to Boracay are reigning champion
St. Benilde, 1999 winner FEU, Adamson and St. Francis in the men's
division, and 2002 champion Adamson, St. Benilde, Letran and University
of Baguio in the distaff side. *CIT
