UNO-R duo survives,

LA SALLE BETS WILT IN NESTEA EVENT
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos bets Janus Dumaran and Neil Majillano dispatched two rivals yesterday to reach the Boracay phase of the 10th Nestea Beach Volley Championships.

But three Bacolod teams, including two from the University of St. La Salle were showed the door, after dropping its assignments at the La Salle Greenhills sand courts in Manila.

Showing more cohesion under stifling conditions, Dumaran and Majillano ousted Iloilo Doctor's College, 25-20, before smashing Foundation University, 25-21, for their fourth straight stint in the national semifinals.

With the victories, the Recoletos pair completed a three-game sweep of the Visayas eliminations at the La Salle Greenhills Sandcourts in San Juan Manila. The UNO-R duo also defeated University of San Agustin-Iloilo, 25-17, Tuesday.

"Dumaran and Majillano did not expect to make it this time because of the very tough field," UNO-R coach Jason Delmo, whose wards placed fifth in the Boracay phase last year, told the DAILY STAR.

. "But they both deserved these victories because they worked really hard for it," he added.

It was a different story though for the UNO-R volleybelles, and the men and women's teams of USLS.

Recoletos lady spikers Christine Dioso and Jenny Torres demolished University of San Carlos, 25-9, in the morning, only to be ousted from the tournament after losing to University of San Jose Recoletos, 18-25.

After scoring two victories against its first two assignments Tuesday, the men's squad of USLS, composed of Mark Sabusap and Marlon Luces, suffered setbacks against different rivals that led to its elimination.

The La Sallians absorbed a 20-25 loss against USJR in the morning game, before enduring a heartbreaking 23-25 setback at the hands of University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

In the women's side, Ola Lopez and Danilyn Lequigan were defeated by USC, 21-25, yesterday paving the way for its exit.

National champion Southwestern University failed to get past the Visayas eliminations and was denied a shot at a fourth straight women's crown losing to USP, 25-15,

Advancing to the national semis and finals on May 4 to 6 are San Agustin, UV, USP and University of San Jose Recoletos in the women's division.

Joining UNO-R in Boracay are USJR, University of San Carlos and Foundation University.

Drawing the attention yesterday was the women's pair from University of San Agustin. which defeated Foundation, 25-23, and became the first team to advance with a perfect 3-0 record.

Luzon teams already assured of slots to Boracay are reigning champion St. Benilde, 1999 winner FEU, Adamson and St. Francis in the men's division, and 2002 champion Adamson, St. Benilde, Letran and University of Baguio in the distaff side. *CIT
