Mayor bucks
proposed STL
BY ROMY AMARADO

Sibulan Mayor Antonio Renacia said he will oppose the government-sponsored Small Town Lottery once it is introduced in his town.

Renacia said the STL will just affect the poor people who may be attracted to it because the bet money is affordable, as in jueteng.

"It will make the poor poorer because they will be betting their last centavo in the hope that they can earn easy money, especially with our adverse economic situation nowadays," Renacia said.

"That is why we will not allow that. We should oppose the STL," he added. Renacia also said the money of the people in his town will be siphoned by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office in Manila, and, what will be left to them is only a small part of PCSO earning.

He said he hopes that political leaders in Oriental Negros will not pressure them to support the STL, Renacia said. Earlier, Valencia Mayor Rodolfo Gonzales, executive vice president of the League of Municipalities-Oriental Negros chapter, said the league will oppose STL if it is brought to the province.

Gov. George Arnaiz also said that he is against the STL.*RA
