Baseball coach Narciso Jayme yesterday apologized for fielding
an ineligible player during the regional Palaro in Roxas City and
said he is ready to face the consequences of his action that had
tainted the successful campaign of Negros in the Games.
And even if the Department of Education has yet to decide
on the sanctions to be meted on him, Jayme appealed for a milder
penalty, saying that teaching is his only source of income.
"I sincerely apologize for what I did and for the shame and
scandal I have caused my players and the province," he said in his
explanation letter to the Department Education yesterday.
"I'm willing to accept sanctions, but I'm also appealing to
be given a lesser penalty, considering that teaching is my only
source of living and I am the only bread winner of my family," Jayme
said.
Superintendent Eva Belicena of the Negros Occidental Schools
Division said regional director Victoriano Tirol Jr. of the Western
Visayas DepEd will decide on the possible sanctions on Jayme, who
mentored the Neg. Occ. high school boys' baseball squad during the
regional meet.
Jayme fielded team trainer Mark Jerota who was not included
in the initial line-up submitted to the WVRAA screening committee
during its semifinal match against Capiz, which filed a protest
that was upheld by the Board of Jury.
Jayme, who coaches at the Dr. Antonio Lizares Memorial High
School in Dos Hermanas, Talisay City, said that he only fielded
Jerota in the second inning because he was "being bothered by his
conscience".
"At first I thought my actions were not serious because Mark
(Jerota) was only three days overage, but now I realize how big
my mistake was and I am being bothered by it," he said.
He said that he was motivated to do such acts because of his
desire to give honor and glory to Negros Occidental.
"I realized that no matter how noble one's intentions are,
it can never be justified by the unjust means of achieving it,"
he added in his letter that will be forwarded by Belicena to Tirol
within the week.
Jayme offered no excuses over his actions. "No words can explain
the shame and remorse I am feeling right now especially that I am
now being persecuted by public opinion," he added. Composing the
Negros high school boys' baseball squad, which was relegated to
last place in the six-team tournament because of Jayme's actions,
were Kasulhay Argel, Abraham Bolivar, Obher Jay Dayon, Roberto Descutido
Jr., Jonathan Jerota, James Posadas, Mark Posadas, Rimrey Tingson,
Edson Torenia, Russel Alulod, Frederick John Posadas and Jessie
