BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

West Negros College will see action in the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association Tournament that fired off at the Toledo Gym in Cebu City last week.

The Elvis Atinado-mentored Mustangs will begin its campaign against M Lhuillier Kwarta Padala on April 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the University of San Agustin-Iloilo Gym, before battling Toledo Landmasters on April 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the same venue.

WNC grabbed the national basketball limelight early this month by topping the recent 60th National Students Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championships in Legazpi City, Bicol. The Mustangs claimed its first-ever national crown in the National University Games in Bacolod City last year.

The Mustangs, led by skipper Stanley Tizon, Severino Baclao, Ely Olarte, Sunny Abaring and Vengie Vergara, has also dominated the local basketball scene by bringing home the NOPSSSCEA basketball title for seven consecutive years. Aside from the Wesnecans, Toledo and M Lhuillier cagers, stalwarts from Toyota-Iloilo complete the line-up of Visayas-based squads that will compete in the tournament.

Teams coming from Mindanao are Iligan City, Mizamiz Oriental, Davao-Montaņa and the squad of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, General Santos-Pacman.

BAP Region VII commissioner Jose Morelio is spearheading the organization of the Basketball Association of the Philippines-sanctioned event in the Visayas region, Region VI commissioner Rolando "Jack" Maraņon said. Willie Generalo leads the organization of the tournament, which was founded by BAP vice-president for Visayas Raul Alcoseba, in the Mindanao area, he said. *CIT
