The Tanjay City Sanggunian has started deliberations on a plan
to build a P30-million integrated bus terminal and motorpool on
a six-hectare government land near Square Garden, three kilometers
from the city center.
Councilor Erkki Lozarita said the project aims at decongesting
traffic in the center of the city and to encourage economic growth
in the sparsely populated site outside the city proper.
Lozarita described the project as pro-poor because it would
benefit small vendors by opening new businesses in the terminal
complex.
At the moment, he said, the city government has enough money
to build more projects and implement new programs because of its
annual P220 million share of the Internal Revenue Allotment and
the annual income of the city government of more than P40 million.
Meanwhile, Lozarita admitted that he has received invitations
from groups urging him to run for vice mayor in the elections next
year.
The councilor, a journalist, said his options remain open but
that, he was subject to, and would abide by the rules and disciplines
of the Nationalist People's Coalition to which he belongs.*RG
