Comelec welcomes
new registrants

The Commission on Elections is ready for the registration of new voters and those who have transferred their residences under the continuing system of registration if they want to participate in three major electoral exercises that will be conducted next year, a Philippine Information Agency press release said yesterday.

Comelec officials, led by Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. said the three major electoral exercises scheduled to be conducted next year are the regular election for local and national officials in May, Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls in October, and the possible plebiscite on Charter change.

The law provides that no registration will be conducted within the 120 days period before a regular election day and 90 days before the special election day.

Registration is conducted daily in the Comelec offices in 114 cities and 1,496 municipalities nationwide.

In Bacolod City, registration started on February 16, 2006 and will end December 31, 2006. Registrants and poll officials will file their applications personally at the Comelec office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there is no registration in the barangay level.

Mavil Majarucon of Comelec-Bacolod, said the registration will be suspended on every third Monday of the quarter for the Electoral Registration Board hearing. They will then post for a week the names of the registrants for the scrutiny of the political parties before registration resumes. The first scheduled suspension is on April 17, 2006 and registration will resume a week after the posting.

The applicant should bring any of the following for verification, Postal ID card, student's ID or library card, senior citizen's ID card, driver's license, NBI/PNP clearance, passport or SSS/GSIS ID Card. *
