The Philippines turns up its preparations for the Asian Challenge
Cup when it plays a pair of friendly matches against Southeast Asian
powerhouse Thailand on Sunday and Tuesday at the Chonburi Stadium
in Bangkok.
The RP booters are hoping to get a better result against the
Thais, who have dealt them painful losses in recent years, including
a 1-0 setback in an Under-23 match-up in the Southeast Asian Games
last year in Bacolod City.
The Asian Challenge Cup, featuring FIFA developmental countries,
is set next month in Bangladesh with the Philippines kicking off
its stint against Chinese Taipei on April 1.
Also included in the Philippines' group are India and Afghanistan.
The Filipinos kick off their campaign on April 1 against Chinese
Taipei.
Meanwhile, Thai coach Charnwit Phalajivin has called up
18 players for the matches, the AFC website said.
Phalajivin, who coached the Thai team in the SEA Games, will
field his senior team in the Sunday game and the Under-23 squad,
led by star striker Teerathep Winothai, in the second match.
Malaysia was also expected to take part in the friendlies but
have withdrawn. *CPT
