'Disparity in gov't wages
causes demoralization'
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The disparity in the wages of government employees and those of government-owned-and-controlled corporations has caused too much demoralization among the ranks in the government service, Senate Majority Floor Leader Francis Pangilinan said.

"It's about time we review the salary standardization law because of the growing exemptions, to the prejudice of lowly-paid employees," he said.

Pangilinan who was in Oriental Negros recently, recalled that a bill was filed in the Senate for the review of the salary standardization law, but it is waiting for the version of the House of Representatives, it being an appropriation measure.

The signature campaign for the people's initiative as a mode in changing the 1987 Constitution is now in full swing with officials in Oriental Negros and Dumaguete City supporting it.

Gov. George Arnaiz said that among the 20 municipal mayors in the province, only Mayor Junnifer Villegas of Vallahermoso town has not signified an intention to support the move.

He said the mayor is closely identified with a politician who is against charter change.

Prosecutor inhibits
self from case
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

An assistant provincial prosecutor in Oriental Negros has inhibited himself from hearing the murder charges filed against suspected members of the New People's Army, accused of killing the leader of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade and two civilian volunteers on Jan. 26, in Poblacion Mabinay, in the province.

Provincial Assistant Prosecutor Juditho Agan said he inhibited himself from the case for reason of delicadeza, being a close associate of the mother of one of the suspects, TJ Nuico, a member of a militant group in Oriental Negros and of the League of Filipino Students.

Agan said Nuico's mother, Mildred, is the board secretary of the Cooperative Bank of the Philippines, of which he is the vice chairman.
