Toll packaging
plant eyed in Visayas

The Packaging Research and Development Center of the Industrial Technology Development Institute is planning to establish Satellite Packaging Service and Testing Centers in strategic areas nationwide to fast track packaging assistance outside Metro Manila.

The Department of Science and Technology said in a press release that the first of these satellite plants established in Bulacan started operation in December 2005.

The implementation of a Toll Packaging Plant and Services project is seen to boost the development of Small and Medium Enterprises especially in raising product quality systems.

DOST regional directors are fully supporting the project , which thePRDC initiated in August 2004, the press release said.

At their recent meeting in Kalibo, Aklan, they discussed the potential of putting up one satellite toll packaging plant in North Luzon and another in the Visayas.

Aside from working on the satellite toll packaging plants, PRDC is also implementing several foreign assisted projects, including the "Development/Improvement of Packaging Systems of Philippine Selected Products in the Regions", funded by Japanese International Cooperation Agency, and "PACkit, Profile of Philippine Packaging Industry," funded by the World Trade Organization and the United Nations Commission on Trade and Development, the press release added.*
