DepEd eyes sanction
vs. baseball officials

Officials of the Negros Occidental high school boys' baseball team may face sanctions from the Department of Education after fielding a player in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet in Roxas City who was not included in the initial line-up submitted to the WVRAA screening committee, DepEd regional director Victoriano Tirol said last night.

But Tirol said he is not yet ready to discuss the possible penalty against erring team officials, led by head coach Narciso Jayme from Dos Hermanas, Talisay City, pending a deeper investigation on the case.

The ineligible player was the trainer of the team and was allegedly "overaged" for the competition, a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the DAILY STAR.

Cash incentives amounting to P350,000 will be given by the Provincial Government to the Negros athletes who claimed medals in the 2006 Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet in Roxas City, Capiz, Rosanna Anasariar, administration officer of the Negros Occidental Department of Education, said yesterday.

In a welcome party at the Capitol yesterday, Gov. Joseph Maraņon said the gold, silver and bronze medalists will receive P800, P200 and P100, respectively, to be given within the week.

Maraņon said that the Provincial Government could not compensate for all of the efforts of the Negros student-athletes, but it is doing its best to recognize them.
