Mayor pursues cage project
BY RENE GENOVE

Ayungon Mayor Edsel Enardecido said he will pursue his bangus fish cage project to provide additional livelihood to coastal residents of the municipality, in Oriental Negros.

The regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has committed to support his project, the mayor said.

Enardecido also said that the government recognizes the need to promote food security by increasing fish production through the accelerated transfer of fishing technology and training of coastal fisher folks who are the direct participants in the proper management of marine water resources.

He had earlier asked for financial help from the BFAR to help build the project.

Quoting BFAR regional director Dionisio de la Pena, Jr., Enardecido said the fisheries office has assessed and identified the need to train and to give livelihood opportunities to fishermen, particularly in Brgy. Anibong as part of the MAKAMASA fisheries program of the national government.

He also said the project is one way of strengthening the capability of fishermen and local government units to wisely use and manage the marine water resources of the coastal town.

Enardecido said he is hoping that the first recipients of the project will develop the true sense of responsibility to sustain the project and become stewards of a healthy marine environment.

He added that the project will indirectly stop the depletion of the marine resources of the municipality.*RG
