Negros sweeps Palaro titles

ROXAS CITY --- Fresh victories in athletics, taekwondo, gymnastics, lawn tennis and chess yesterday ensured Negros Occidental's safe ride to the summit of both elementary and secondary divisions at the close of the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet here.

All told, the Negros athletes formally clinched the overall crown in the elementary division with 360.5 championship points, highlighted by a sweep of athletics, badminton, chess, volleyball and lawn tennis, where the boys' team was declared the co-titlist with Iloilo. It was a sweet revenge for the Negrenses, who lost the overall title to Iloilo by two golds last year when the Games were held in Iloilo City. The Ilonggos logged 310.5 points for second place, followed by host Capiz (127), Antique (110), Aklan (76) and Guimaras (51).

Reynor Dominguez scored 86 points to bring home the crown in the Rotary "Golf for a Cause" Tournament over the weekend at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Barangay Bata, Bacolod City.

The 51-year-old Dominguez, who had a handicap of 28 during the event that adopted the Stableford scoring system, said he is overwhelmed to snare the championship considering that he only started playing the sport two years ago.

Ray Lim reigned supreme in the class A hostilities with 80 points, while Matt Opada collected 84 points to take the title in class B. Jojo Quilop topped class C after posting 84 points as Juan Carlos Torre claimed the class D crown by registering 82 points.

Governor Joseph Maraņon yesterday lauded the feat of the Negros contingent, sweeping the elementary and secondary overall crowns of the 2006 Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet at the Villareal Stadium in Roxas City, Capiz.

Maraņon said he did not have any second thoughts that the Negrense student-athletes would bring home the overall championship because they had been practicing well.

"It was an expected victory. We had no doubts because the performance of our players has been excellent. I am very happy with the results," Maraņon told the DAILY STAR.
