Governor Joseph Maraņon yesterday lauded the feat of the Negros
contingent, sweeping the elementary and secondary overall crowns
of the 2006 Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet
at the Villareal Stadium in Roxas City, Capiz.
Maraņon said he did not have any second thoughts that the
Negrense student-athletes would bring home the overall championship
because they had been practicing well.
"It was an expected victory. We had no doubts because the
performance of our players has been excellent. I am very happy with
the results," Maraņon told the DAILY STAR.
Negros clinched the overall title in the elementary competitions
after amassing 360.5 championship points, while the Negrense secondary
athletes collected 432.5 championship markers to grab the overall
championship. Maraņon said the players also practiced hard before
leaving for the regional meet and their sacrifices really paid off.
The governor, earlier, had said that the Provincial Government
will give cash incentives to the medal winners of the school-based
meet.
There are no specific amounts yet to be provided for the medalists,
but the Provincial Government has already allotted a budget for
the winners, he said. *CIT
