Tax bureau notes
payment upsurge
BY ROMY AMARADO

The provincial treasurer's office of Oriental Negros has noted a sudden upsurge of interest among taxpayers to pay their real property taxes following distribution of notices to delinquent taxpayers.

Provincial Treasurer Danilo Mendez said, that, in line with the thrust of his office to trim down by at least 50 percent the delinquent taxes for real properties in the province, notices were posted in the different municipalities in Oriental Negros. Posting began last February.

The notice contains the information about the decision of the provincial government to auction properties of delinquent taxpayers.

As a result, many taxpayers have suddenly shown eagerness to pay their taxes. In fact, Mendez said, some of them made their payment at the provincial treasurer's office.

Mendez said the next step is for his office to publicize in a newspaper of provincial circulation the properties to be auctioned.

He said that, to avoid hassles, people with obligations must pay their delinquency before the auction, or enter into a compromise agreement with the provincial government.

Mendez said such action will be resorted to by the provincial government because many taxpayers have been taking their tax obligations for granted.*RA
