The group commander of the 7th Regional Community Defense Group of the Philippine Army said the enrollment in the Reserved Officers' Training Corps has declined.

Col. Guillermo Luyao Jr., commander of the RCDG based in Camp Lapu-Lapu, in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu, bared this in an interview about his assessment of the military reserve course.

Luyao said that from a peak enrollment of 40,000 in Oriental Negros in the past, the number has dwindled to only 5,000 at present.

Issue receipts, BIR
warns lending firms

The Bureau of Internal Revenue has warned that it will look closely into the alleged non-issuance of receipts practiced by a number of lending agencies in Dumaguete City.

Jose Senador, chief of the taxpayers' service section of BIR in Oriental Negros, issued the warning after receiving at least 21 complaints from borrowers against the alleged malpractice of some lending institutions.

Senador explained that lending firms lend money to different classes of people but, at times, when borrowers failed to pay their debts, the agency is forced to file a collection case against them in court.

Man belies slay charges

A suspect in the killing of a 33-year-old coconut tuba gatherer in Brgy. Don Esperedion Villegas denied ambushing the victim in Vallehermoso, Oriental Negros.

Priscillo Ceniza appeared before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office yesterday to face charges for the killing of Vicente Binag, 33, married of Upper Brgy. Don Esperidion Villegas, in the town. Ceniza told the prosecutor's office that, contrary to the witnesses' statements, he was not in the barangay at the time of the killing.

The suspect is now detained at the Vallehermoso police station.
