Bishop warns vs. moves
on peaceful protestors

Soliman of Inayauan, Cauayan, right, being led away by cops in Manila late Friday. She was released shortly before midnight.*

Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra yesterday warned that the arrest of people engaged in peaceful protests could force others to resort to more violent means.

Navarra was reacting to the arrest by the police in Manila of former Social Welfare secretary Corazon "Dinky" Soliman who is from Inayauan, Cauayan, in Negros Occidental, and Black and White Movement convener Vicente "Enteng" Romano III late yesterday.

Soliman, who was interviewed by the DAILY STAR by cellular phone last night, said she and Romano were being held at the Manila Police District headquarters and they did not know what charges were going to be filed against them. moremoremore

Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra yesterday said that if House Speaker Jose de Venecia meets with him Monday he will tell him that he is against Charter Change at this time.

De Venecia is scheduled to arrive in Negros Monday and will take up moves toward Charter Change with mayors and barangay captains of Negros Occidental at the provincial Capitol in Bacolod City, Vice Gov. Isidro Zayco said earlier.

Zayco said that de Venecia's itinerary includes a meeting with Navarra, but the prelate yesterday said he has not been informed about it. moremoremore

+Rep. Ignacio Arroyo Jr. (Neg. Occ., 5th district) and Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella should open their eyes to the reality that 65 percent of the Filipinos do not trust President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and want her out, Bayan-Negros secretary general Felipe Levy Gelle said yesterday.

Levy was referring to the results of the recently released Pulse Asia Inc. survey.

The survey showed that 65 percent of the Filipinos believe that the resignation or removal of Arroyo from office would be the best way to solve the country's political crisis but they did not have a consensus on how her successor should be chosen. moremoremore
