NEGROS WINS SOFTBALL TITLE

ROXAS CITY --- A walkover win to spark a deluge of victories.

Negros Occidental bagged the elementary girls' softball crown even before the first pitch was thrown as action in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet goes full blast today with 30 golds up for grabs at the Villareal Stadium here.

The batters from Education and Training Center School in Bacolod City gave Negros' bid to dislodge Iloilo in the elementary division an early boost, winning the softball crown after other provinces failed to field entries in the event. The title, worth 25 points in the novel championship point system, gives the Negrenses the headstart in the duel between the two regional rivals in the six-day meet, featuring Western Visayas' top school-based athletes.

Guv to give incentives
to regional meet winners

Gov. Joseph Maraņon yesterday said that he will give cash incentives to the Negros student-athletes who will snare medals in the on-going Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet at the Villareal Stadium in Roxas City, Cadiz.

The athletes who will grab gold, silver and bronze medals will receive cash incentives from the Provincial Government, but the amounts have yet to be specified, Maraņon said.

The Provincial Government has already allotted the incentives for the Negrense competitors because it foresees that we will become the overall champions, he added. Negros snatched the overall title in the secondary division of the regional meet in Iloilo City last year, while archrival Iloilo brought home the overall crown in the elementary category.

'Beach volley bets
90% going to Asiad'

The president of the Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines yesterday expressed confidence that the RP beach volleyball men and women's squads will be among the teams to be sent by the Philippine Olympic Committee to see action in the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar in December.

"We are between 80 to 90 percent sure that the beach volleyball players will be able to compete in the Asian Games," Roger Banzuela told the DAILY STAR.

In a meeting with the POC Wednesday, Banzuela, who also serves as the president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation, was given a copy of the guidelines for the RP squads that will banner the Philippine contingent in the quadrennial meet. Banzuela, however, said that the copy of the guidelines is not an assurance that the beach volleyball spikers will be among the Filipino athletes who will go to Qatar, but it certainly increases their chances of joining the delegation.
