The president of the Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines
yesterday expressed confidence that the RP beach volleyball men
and women's squads will be among the teams to be sent by the Philippine
Olympic Committee to see action in the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar
in December.
"We are between 80 to 90 percent sure that the beach volleyball
players will be able to compete in the Asian Games," Roger Banzuela
told the DAILY STAR.
In a meeting with the POC Wednesday, Banzuela, who also serves
as the president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation, was given
a copy of the guidelines for the RP squads that will banner the
Philippine contingent in the quadrennial meet. Banzuela, however,
said that the copy of the guidelines is not an assurance that the
beach volleyball spikers will be among the Filipino athletes who
will go to Qatar, but it certainly increases their chances of joining
the delegation.
The decision of the country's Olympic body, headed by Jose
"Peping" Cojuangco, on what squads to include in its roster for
the Asian Games will be known next month, he said.
RP beach volley coach Rustico Camangian said the RP spikers
have already been given slots by the Asian Volleyball Confederation
in the international event.
In case POC agrees to send the beach volley bets to the Asian
Games, the RP men's team will be a combination of a Filipino-American
and a Filipino, while the women's squad will be bannered by Fil-Ams
Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua, Banzuela said.
The Ilustre-Pascua duo brought home bronze medals for the country
in the women's division of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games beach
volleyball hostilities at the University of St. La Salle sandcourts
in Bacolod City last year. Banzuela said that the PVF has also finished
and submitted its liquidation report to the Philippine Sports Commission.
