DA REPORT SAYS
Sugar prices declining;
retail down to P38/kilo

The Department of Agriculture said in its March 15 report that prices of sugar have begun to decline as prevailing prices in many areas have decreased from P40 to P38 per kilo.

This indicates that the drop in wholesale price is now being felt by consumers, the DA report said, adding that easing of prices may be attributed to good sugar production this year.

Sugar Regulatory Administration data show that sugar production as of Feb. 26, 2006 this year totaled 1,412,184 metric tons, almost 70 percent of the projected production for the current crop year of 2,018 million metric tons.

MBCCI recommends
suspension of CARP implementation

The Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry is pushing for the temporary suspension of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program to pave the way for an overall assessment of its implementation.

The recommendation is contained in the memorandum the MBCCI submitted to Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman which outlined some of the factors that led to the perception that the CARP has failed miserably to uplift the lives of workers.

MBCCI president Robert Montelibano said that almost 8,500 hectares have already been distributed to some 5,000 farm beneficiaries involving more than P8 billion of program funds, but up to now almost 15 years of implementation it is difficult to identify even one percent sustainable success anywhere in the province.

Tabugon animal raisers
receive loan assistance

The Tabugon Livestock and Poultry Raisers Association recently received a P60,000 livelihood and loan assistance from the Kabankalan City government, a press release from the mayor's office said.

The 70-member association also received 66 bags of hog feeds from the provincial government turned over by Nestor Bayona, executive assistant of Gov. Joseph Maraņon, it said.

TALPRA members are presently raising 100 pigs that will be bought by the provincial government, the press release said. The loan assistance was turned over by Mayor Pedro Zayco who also distributed accident insurance certificates worth P10,000 each to members of the different civic and livelihood associations in Brgy. Tabugon.
