A marketing committee has been formed by the Philippine Volleyball
Federation to look for corporate sponsors that will fund the staging
of the Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championships from May 24 to
30 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
The marketing group will try to tap corporate sponsors that
will give financial support to hold the Asian volleyball event,
which needs at least P3 million to be staged, PVF president Roger
Banzuela said. Banzuela, who also serves as the president of the
newly formed Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines, said
the P3 million proposed budget will be used to pay the venue rental
and hotel accommodations of the competing squads.
Volleybelles from Thailand, Kazakhstan, China, Indonesia,
Chinese Taipei and Philippines will vie for the championship of
the AWCVC that will be held for the first time in the country.
The practice venues of the lady spikers will be at the St.
Benilde Gym, the San Andres Gym in Malate and the De La Salle University
Gym.
Banzuela said he hopes that the marketing committee could
generate big sponsors in order for the PVF to use the extra money
to pay its $100,000 debt to the International Volleyball Federation
or FIVB.
The $100,000 or close to P5.3 million debt represents the
unsettled bonds for the Philippines' hosting of a leg of the World
Grand Prix women's volleyball last year and another GP in 2004.
PVF failed to pay the hosting fee of $75,000 or about P4 million
for the staging of a GP leg in Manila last year and it is still
has a $25,000 balance for hosting another GP tournament two years
ago, Banzuela said.
He said the tournament organizers backed out at the last minute
in 2005, while the marketing group of the 2004 GP leg failed to
get sponsors.
Meanwhile, Banzuela said that the RP beach volleyball squads
are almost assured to have slots in the teams that will be sent
by the Philippine Olympic Committee to the Asian Games in Doha,
Qatar in December.
The POC will meet with the officials of the different national
sports associations today to discuss the possible squads that will
be included in the Philippine contingent for the Asiad, he said.
