Army seizes training camp
of rebels in NegOr skirmish
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The encounter between about 30 suspected New People's Army rebels and patrolling soldiers of the 61st Infantry Battalion on Tuesday in Santa Catalina, Oriental Negros, led to the discovery and seizure of another rebel training camp.

Lt. Col. Norman Flores, 61st IB commander, yesterday said the training camp is located in the creek line of Sitio Haluay, Brgy. Nagbinlod, Santa Catalina, and can accommodate at least 100 persons.

The 30-minute gunbattle also resulted in the arrest of a certain Rowell Lastimoso, alias Tata, and the recovery of a .357 magnum revolver and homemade shotgun from his possession, Flores said.

The Oriental Negros government was caught by surprise with the application of a large scale mining operation, especially with the certification issued by the Provincial Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office.

The Minerals Unlimited Mining Corporation, represented by Balgamel Domingo, with office address at Suite 601, L & S building, 1500 Roxas Boulevard, Ermita, Metro Manila had filed an application for Mineral Production Sharing Agreement for the exploration, development and utilization of Magnetite and other associated mineral resources in the coastal barangays of Bal-os, Nagbola-og and Actin, all of Basay, Oriental Negros. The place is about 120 kilometers south of Dumaguete City.

Tsunami-prone areas identified
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A German geologist reiterated the existence of a tsunami risk all over the country, and raised his concern to Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz.

Dr. Martin Falke of the German Development Service showed Arnaiz a map showing some parts of Oriental Negros that he identified as risk areas for tsunami.

Basically, the Philippines is located in a ring of fire which is an alignment of volcanoes and earthquake centers, Falke said, adding that the earthquakes being felt are strong enough to trigger a tsunami.
