Woman killed in road mishap

A 55-year-old housewife succumbed to head injuries and broken bones at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital when the bicycle she was riding collided with a motorcycle late Sunday afternoon along the national highway in Brgy. Banilad, Dumaguete City.

Police identified the victim as Apolonia Vidad, a native of Mabinay but residing along Sta. Monica road in Banilad, Dumaguete. Her husband, Librado, 57, a farmer, said that before the collision, he and his wife were driving separate bicycles on their way to Brgy. Junob to visit their married son.

On reaching the national highway-Bajumpandan road, he said he signaled his wife who was several meters behind him not to cross the highway because two oncoming motorcycles were heading their way from the south. Few minutes later, when the first motorcycle passed, Librado thought it was already safe for his wife to cross leftward and told her to do so, noting that the second motorcycle was still far away.

But as the victim turned left to cross the road, the second motorcycle with two riders just appeared and collided with the bicycle, throwing the housewife on and the motorists into the paved road.

The victim and the two motorists lost consciousness, Librado who picked up his wife and with the help of a rider of another passing motorcycle rushed her to the hospital, said. But she succumbed to the injuries five hours later, he added.*
