The National Food Authority provincial office has 65,000 sacks
of rice in its warehouse ready to meet any need in case of any calamity
in Oriental Negros.
NFA assistant provincial manager Francisco Lorico Jr. said
the standby supply is part of the mandate of the cereal agency to
maintain a 15-day buffer or 65,000 sacks of rice available at all
times.
Lorico said that, although the year had just started, NFA
must be prepared at all times.
Gov. George Arnaiz met with the Provincial Disaster Coordinating
Council last month to draft plans to prepare the province for any
calamity.
Lorico assured Arnaiz that the stocks are available and if
any need arises, the provincial office could get additional supply
from the Cebu NFA office.
Lorico said the agency has not failed to give its services
during times of calamities in the province.
Meanwhile, Lorico said he projects more rice consumption in
Oriental Negros this year because of poor corn harvest in the first
cropping season.
He explained that some corn users shift to rice when the price
of their usual food goes up.
At present, the price of NFA corngrits has remained at P18.50
per kilogram and its rice at P18.*RG
