'City dumpsite
health hazard'
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A solid waste consultant from the German Development Service has recommended the immediate fencing of the controlled dumpsite in Barangay Candau-ay, Dumaguete City, saying it is a health hazard.

Dr. Martin Falke, a consultant of the Environment and Natural Resources Division of Oriental Negros, said the dumpsite has become, not only a health hazard to surrounding areas but most especially to children. He recommended the construction of a leachate canal around the garbage dumpsite, and the establishment of a 4-chamber treatment pond before the water is allowed to exit to Banica River.

He also said scavengers must wear masks.

At present, Falke said, the leachate is not only polluting the Banica River but it could be a source of contamination of the ground water of the city. Residential houses should not be allowed in the dumpsite area, nor should it be used for agriculture purposes, Falke stressed, adding that the risk of possible butane gas explosions is not remote.*JG
