LGUs pursue
landfill acquisition
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A cluster of local government units comprising the Metro Dumaguete Area is continuing its efforts for the acquisition of a sanitary land fill located in Tunga-Tunga, Dauin town, Oriental Negros.

After almost one-and-a-half years of planning and preparation, the German Development Service which is extending technical assistance to the cluster of LGUs with the provincial government, is pushing for the realization of the project.

The province had initially allocated P500,000 for conducting the study.

Starting tomorrow, technical people from the Department of Environment in Oriental Negros will be sent to the proposed site to conduct surveys.

The Provincial Engineer's Office was tasked by Gov. George Arnaiz to start digging the test pit in the proposed site. It is awaiting the operator from Manila, Dr.Martin Falke, a geologist, to prove that the area in Dauin is suitable for the establishment of a sanitary landfill.

Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, had given LGUs only up to February 2006 to comply with provisions of establishing a sanitary landfill.

Most, if not all LGUs, have complied with the provisions, all over the country.*JG
