Toastmasters hold
speech contest

A student of La Consolacion College-Main was champion in the 5th Toastmasters Invitational Speechfest on Table Topics or Impromptu Speaking hosted by the Toastmasters International Division D, held at the Audio Visual Room of the Bacolod Tay Tung High School, in Bacolod City, recently, a press release from the group said.

Kimberly Aiko Ploteņa who bested other participants from public and private high schools in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental was trained by Hazel Atilano.

Dominique Garcia of the University of St. La Salle-Integrated School and Victoria Dreyfus of St. Scholastica's Academy, both in Bacolod, were first and second runners-up, respectively.

The participants were from selected schools in Isabela, Binalbagan, Valladolid and EB Magalona, and the cities of Bacolod, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, Talisay, Silay, Cadiz and Sagay, the press release said.

Chairman of the event Organizing Committee was Ro Leonora and the chief judge was Babes Justiniani.

Toastmasters International is a worldwide organization helping those who want to develop self-confidence through the verbal communication.

RDC lauds Bacolod,
Iloilo for AIM awards

The Regional Development Council in Western Visayas recognized the cities of Bacolod and Iloilo for having been adjudged as most competitive cities in the country in the mid-sized category, at the 1st Regular Regional Development Council meeting last week, held at Puerto Real, Lapaz, Iloilo City, a city hall press release said yesterday.

RDC chairperson Antique Gov. Salvacion Perez who presided at the meeting congratulated Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Iloilo City Jerry Treņas.

The two cities were among the top five mid-sized cities in the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2005 of the Asian Institute of Management.

Indicators for the AIM recognition are the quality of life and infrastructure of a city, cost of doing business, dynamism and local economy, human resources and training, responsiveness of the local government and linkages to major urban and growth centers.

Bacolod was also a recipient of the 2005 Apolinario Mabini Award for the Local Government Unit of the Year from the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled Inc.

The citation will be given March 24 at Malacaņang Palace with President Gloria Arroyo as guest of honor and speaker, the press release added.*
