LAND ROW
Sta. Catalina government
ordered to return property
BY RENE GENOVE

The Municipal Trial Court in Sta. Catalina, Oriental Negros, has ordered the municipal government to return to the claimants a 1,400-square meter land in Brgy. Cawitan of the town that it had occupied for several years and now has a market value of about P8.4 million.

Judge Rogaciano Rivera of the MTC ordered the return of the property that is presently housing the barangay health center, a feeding center, and a concrete path built by the municipal government to the Guerero family, most of whose members are now living in Misamis Oriental in northern Mindanao.

In his decision, Rivera said that the municipal government had failed to answer the ejectment complaint and damages filed by the claimants composed of the Guerero family, and the notices of the court.

Mining operation
resumes in Ayungon
BY ROMY AMARADO

A mining operation in Oriental Negros that was closed down due to complaints of environmental destruction, health concerns and failure to pay local taxes, has been allowed to resume its activity.

Gov. George Arnaiz in his order dated March 9, 2006, lifted the suspension of the mining activity of the heirs of Arturo Zayco Sr., in Barangay Maaslum, Ayungon, a town 82 kilometers north of Dumaguete City.

Zayco's heirs are holders of a permit from the Mines and Geo Sciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to conduct a large scale quarrying of silica in Maaslum. They, however, contracted the Goodyield Resources Development Inc., to do the actual mining operation.

Moratorium at Okoy River
did not stop illegal quarry
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The illegal and unabated quarrying of sand and gravel has continued at the Okoy River, despite the moratorium imposed by the municipality of Sibulan, Oriental Negros.

Members of the Provincial Mining and Regulatory Board, however, blame the illegal extraction on the moratorium issued by the municipality.

The multipartite monitoring team was formed to strictly enforce environmental laws at the Okoy River.
