No Army commander
yet for Negros

The guessing game as to who will be the next military commander of Negros island is still on.

Almost two weeks after Brig. Gen. Jogy Leo Fojas was relieved as commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, the Philippine Army has not yet named his successor. Fojas who was the 303rd IB commander in Negros for almost two years, is now the deputy of Maj. Gen. Pedro Ramboanga, AFP deputy chief of staff for Operations.

The names of Col. Jerry Jalandoni, of Bago City, and Col. Gregorio Fajardo, Task Force Panay commander, have cropped up among the strong contenders for the position vacated by Fojas.

There are two infantry battalions composed of about 1,000 men, excluding the Army's 542nd Engineering Battalion, placed under the supervision of the 303rd Infantry Brigade on Negros island, military records show.

Jalandoni, commander of the 604th Infantry Brigade in Mindanao, yesterday said there is no order yet for him to be transferred to Negros as 303rd Infantry Brigade commander.

Col. Bonifacio de Castro took over the command of 303rd Infantry Brigade as officer-in-charge, pending announcement of the successor of Fojas.

De Castro, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class '79, used to serve as chief of staff of the Army's 8th Infantry Division in Catarman, Samar, before he became the deputy of Fojas in previous months. Col. Ariel Querubin, a Marine officer linked to the coup plot, and Col. Arturo Ortiz, Special Forces Regiment commander, are among members of PMA Class '79 and recipients of the much-coveted Medal of Valor.*GPB
