LYTE program

A nationwide educational program for high school students called LYTE or Leading the Youth Towards Environment sponsored by San Miguel Corp. was held in Bacolod City, recently, a press release from San Miguel Brewery Bacolod plant said.

Resource speaker was biologist and environment advocate Dr. Zenaida Catalan, while facilitators were Margarita Villareal and Zach Zaragoza of the SMC Corporate Affairs Office-Social Development Desk, the press release said.

Forty sophomore and junior students and eight biology teachers participated in lectures, discussions and a workshop on the importance of environment conservation.

A trip to a forest area and portion of the Ngalan River at the nearby Sta. Fe Resort, Brgy. Granada, Bacolod, was also held, the press release also said.

The participants were from eight high schools in the host-communities of SMC Bacolod and Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines-Bacolod. These are the Fr. Gratian Murray Integrated School, Emiliano Lizares National High School, Generoso Villanueva National High School - all in Brgy. Granada; Maranatha Christian College and Romanito Maravilla National High School (Brgy. Estefania); and Mansilingan Christian Academy, Mansilingan Agro-Industrial High School and St. Benilde School (Brgy. Mansilingan).

The program aims at helping train the youth to actively advocate activities toward environment conservation, and a manifestation of the corporate social responsibility of SMC, its Bacolod plant manager Dante Patrimonio said in the press release.

The Bacolod workshop is the fifth LYTE training held by SMC. The others were in Pangasinan, Naga, Cavite and Cebu, the press release added.*

Sum-ag SSG officers win
academic, cultural contest

The Supreme Student Government of Sum-ag National High School won the overall championship in the 1st SSG Invitational Academic and Cultural Olympics called "Talents Blitz for Leaders" held at the SNHS Covered Gym, in Bacolod City, recently.

First to 4th runner-up winners were the Holy Family High School, Megumi Academy, St. Joseph School-La Salle and Sum-ag National High School-Cabug Extension, a press release from Sum-ag National High School said. Events contested were the quiz bee, officers' impromptu speaking, doble-doble kara, leaders's instruments parade, and leaders' dance.

Meanwhile, Bon Belandres and Joan Makilan of St. Joseph School-La Salle won as Mr. and Ms. SSG 2006.

SNHS-Cabug Extension was adjudged as having the best SSG t-shirt design, HFVHS won the early bird award, while Megumi Academy had the most number of participants, the press release said.

Event sponsors were Vice Mayor Renecito Novero, various Bacolod schools and private individuals, the press release added.*

CSA-B performing arts
audition, orientation set

An orientation and audition for applicants to the Performing Arts scholarship program of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at the CSA-B Gym, in Bacolod City, a press release from the school said.

Applicants for the Dance Troupe must bring working clothes and must perform a one-minute dance number such as ballet, folk, contemporary, jazz and dance sport.

Chorale, Pop Band and Theater applicants must perform a one-minute song (pop, rock, ballad, classical, etc.) and must bring their own minus-one or CD, the press release said.

Theater applicants must perform or read a prepared English declamation, monologue or stage play excerpt. Brass Band applicants must play any musical instruments that will be provided, it added.

Applicants who will pass the audition will be involved in the Music Theater Festival of the CSA-B Performing Arts in August, and lined up musicals, "Once On This Island," and "Cats."

YMCA induction tomorrow

The Board of Directors of the Young Men's Christian Association-Negros Occidental will be inducted at 7 p.m. tomorrow by Marlinda Tan, national president of the Y's Men's Club Philippine region, at the Business Inn in Bacolod City, a press release from the group said yesterday.

To be inducted are Elmer Balbin - president, Ernesto Pama Jr. - 1st vice president, Fidel Garbanzos - 2nd vice president, Banjamin Montinola - corporate secretary, Restituto Pahilanga Jr. - treasurer, Honorato Tonogbanua - assistant treasurer, Philip Abello - auditor, Miller Serondo - public information officer, and Gilfredo Geolingo - business manager.

Other board members are Cesar Andrade, Franklin Demonteverde, Pablo Estacion, Pepito Gellada, Virgilio Paredes and Ramon Torre, the press release said.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia will head the inducting team with Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael Ceuva, Sipalay Mayor Oscar Montilla, and Carlos Javellana, chairman emeritus of the Negros Occidental Filipino-Chinese Amity Club, as members, the pres release added.*
