Environmental warriors

After all the hullabaloo of a national "crisis" ending like froth in a cup of espresso, I sit down to write, business as usual. The most seditious item I could think of writing right now, would be the last visit to the island by the Greenpeace ship, bringing with it a sense of urgency to our environment--the landslide in Leyte being the latest natural catastrophe to hit our peaceful islands.

Armed with a band of musicians in a makeshift stage and liquor to quell whatever hostilities the natives would have for them…(hello! who doesn't want to have clean air, pristine rivers and lush, green forests, anyway?) the ecological activists headed by super energetic and efficient Energy Campaigner for Greenpeace International Athena Ballesteros, Greenpeace Southeast Asia Eileen Co and Head of the Climate and Energy Team of Greenpeace Intl. Uta Bellion welcomed Bacolod Mayor Bing Leonardia. I teased the Mayor that he was in enemy territory since the Greenpeace ship was docked at the BREDCO port. But seeing the enthusiastic response of the youth and the green movers attending the successful affair, Mayor Bing enthused that there could only be peaceful ground as long as the common good and the youth's future are concerned.

For the ship's safe voyage, young artist Burog Alvarado performed a native incantation. More artists donated handpainted doors for the ship's cabins and young lasses blew kisses to the shipmates after dancing with their amiable and good looking Captain Daniel Rizotti. May Greenpeace grace our shores, soon!

MY PRAYER

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, look with compassion and love on all families throughout the world.*
