Dizon Foundation, CPFN to bid
for nat'l Shell chessfest hosting
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The JRR Dizon Foundation, Inc. and the Chess Players Federation of Negros will bid for Bacolod City to host the 2006 Shell Active Youth Chess Tournament in June or July.

The proposed staging of the Shell tournament in Bacolod will mean that more woodpushers from Negros Occidental will be able to compete in the event, Bro. Roly Dizon of the JRRDFI said.

Dizon said he will inform the organizers of the Shell chess hostilities that Bacolod is interested to host the Western Visayas leg of the event, which has been held in Iloilo City for the past years.

JRRDFI and CPFN want to host the regional competitions because we dream of producing future national, international and grandmasters from Negros through their exposure in different tournaments, he said.

Negros has lots of talented chess players and all they need are regular tournaments to enhance their skills, he added.

Hopefully, we could win the bidding to stage the tournament that is expected to draw 500 chessers for the Negros-based players to be able to save on their expenses, former CPFN president Jessie Sanchez said. Sanchez said that the University of St. La Salle College Covered Court will also be an appropriate venue if Bacolod will be allowed to host the regional event. *CIT
