in regional Palaro
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

About 47 events will be played in the 2006 edition of the Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet from March 16 to 21 at the Villareal Stadium in Roxas City, Capiz.

The student-athletes in the elementary level will be vying for top honors in 21 events, while the 26 events are lined up for the competitors in the secondary category.

The events calendared in the elementary hostilities are the boys and girls' divisions of athletics, badminton, baseball, chess, gymnastics, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball, and the boys' football and sipa, and little league softball. Little league softball, which was not played in the Palarong Panlalawigan in Bacolod City last year, was only included by the National Department of Education in the regional meet last month, Nanette Roa of DepEd said.

Education and Training Center School, which have placed third in the World Series hostilities for the past two years, will banner the Negros little league softball squad in the WVRAA competitions.

Calendared in the secondary hostilities are the boys and girls' archery, athletics, chess, badminton, lawn tennis, gymnastics, table tennis, swimming, volleyball and taekwondo, girls' softball, and the boys' basketball, baseball and boxing.

Majority of the Negrense student-athletes are training at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City, while the players in the jumping events are practicing at the Paglaum Sports Complex.

The athletes coming from the different cities and towns in Negros, except for the ones residing in Bacolod City like the NOPSSCEA players, are also being billeted at Panaad.

The Negrenses brought home the overall title in the secondary category of the regional meet in Iloilo City last year, while the Ilonggos bagged the overall championship in the elementary division. *CIT
