Mustangs snare nat'l crown
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

History made.

West Negros College pulled off a come-from-behind 56-53 victory over defending champion University of Perpetual Help Altas last night to bring home the crown of the 60th National Students Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championships at the Ibalon Centrum Recreation Gym in Legazpi City, Bicol.

The Mustangs, who not only completed an 8-game sweep to win the title, but also made a milestone by becoming the first Bacolod City-based squad that snared the national cagefest crown, arranged a championship showdown against UPH after trouncing National University, 71-61, in the semifinals Saturday. Trailing by margins of 5 to 7 points for the majority of the game, the Mustangs rallied against their Altas rivals in the final four minutes behind the twin three-point connections of Vengie Vergara that gave them their first lead of the game at 50-49.

Pulupandan continued its domination by posting two more victories over the weekend in the 16-Under boys' division of the Negros Occidental Volleyball Association-NOCSF Age-Group Volleyball Championship at the University of St. La Salle Covered Courts in Bacolod City.

The Pulupandan spikers smashed EB Magalona, 25-17, 25-19, Saturday and Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod, 25-18, 25-23, yesterday to improve to 5-0 and keep its lead in the 16-Under boys' category.

Silay City grabbed the top spot in the 16-Under girls' division after registering its three victories. The Silay volleybelles scored wins against La Consolacion College-Main, 26-24, 25-19; CSA-B, 29-27, 25-23, and MCC, 25-10, 25-11.

TBAC, Magnolia, BBC
barge into TKP tilt semis

Pre-tournament picks Talisay Basketball Athletic Club and Magnolia Nutri-oil clinched the first two semifinal seats in the 6th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Cup Basketball Tournament, after posting lopsided victories over the weekend at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

With Nonoy Hugnatan and Bryan Alunan holding the fort, TBAC erected a 31-13 cushion in the first 10 minutes en route to a resounding 100-86 win over Buddy's Friday night, while Magnolia welcomed 2005 MVP Warren Alintano into the line-up with an impressive 96-73 triumph over Summit AMG Pawnshop. Joining TBAC and Magnolia in the semis are tournament darkhorse BBC, which needed a big third quarter to eliminate last year's losing finalist Mambukal Summer Resort, 109-90, Saturday night.
