Former police camp
eyed as tourism site
BY RENE GENOVE

Philippine National Police provincial director, S/Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe, has disclosed a plan to transform a former major police outpost against armed communist rebels into a tourist destination.

Buenafe bared this on the eve of a ceremony to honor five police men killed during a major New People's Army rebel offensive against the Nagbagang police detachment in Sta. Catalina on February 28, 1988 at the height of the communist insurgency in Negros island.

Buenafe said a number of interested individuals have pledged to help transform the training camp into a tourist and camping site for young people, particularly the boy scouts.

He said the group was willing to help rehabilitate the southern PNP headquarters and equip it with facilities to attract tourists and other visitors.

Buenafe said he expects that because of the aggressive tourism campaign of the province many tourists and visitors will be drawn into the area.

The provincial police said the camp Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets could use the camp for training as well.

Buenafe said he welcomes those willing to give their time and effort to help improve the camp.

The ceremony at Nagbagang was highlighted by a wreath-laying and blessing of the shrine and the marker to honor the slain policemen.*RG
