Fifth-ranked squads Probac and Buddy's kept their title hopes
alive with contrasting victories Wednesday night in the quarterfinals
of the 6th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Cup Basketball Tournament at the
Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.
With five players in double-figures, Probac overwhelmed Po's
Panasonic, 91-77, to enter the second phase of the quarterfinals
where it will meet top-ranked New ST Marketing at 7:45 tonight.
After hurdling an experienced Krua Thai squad, 87-83, Wednesday
night, Buddy's will have its hands full against Talisay Basketball
Athletic Club in the next round. Both New ST Marketing and TBAC
hold twice-to-beat advantages.
Immuvit Player of the Game awardee Tommy Andren capped his
25-point performance by sinking a pair of free throws that sealed
the win for Buddy's, after Krua Thai threatened, 84-81, following
Jun Jun Donesa's charity with 20 seconds left.
With Buddy's on top, 78-73, Krua Thai struggled and were
held scoreless over a two-minute stretch, before a stifling foll-court
press allowed them to get back into the game.
Francis Andren chipped in 14 for Buddy's, which also drew
9 more from Nestor Mioten 9, while Godoy Cepriano led Krua Thai
with 22 points. Mars Echarri and Jeff Julian added 10 apiece as
Nene Sibaya made 8 for Krua Thai.
The Probac assault was led by Yen Dolar with 16 points with
Eric Uy and Immuvit Player of the Game winner Kirk Tupas posting
14 and 13, respectively. The two other Probac players in double-figures
were Greggy Gonzales with 11 points and Bobby Agsam with 10.
Bobby Cepeda and Jun Terol led Panasonic with 13 points each,
while Genaro Ledesma and Jeff Wee added 12 and 11, respectively.
