Carrying of guns
now prohibited
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The carrying of firearms even by licensed gunholders outside their residence is now prohibited by the Philippine National Police, with the enforcement of Proclamation 1017 issued by President Arroyo.

Region 6 police director Doroteo Reyes said only members of law enforcement agencies, like the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine Coast Guard, are allowed to do so, and only when performing their duties.

Reyes said the ban on the carrying of firearms outside residences took effect on Feb. 25.

Reyes said the approval and issuance of applications for Permit-to-Carry-Outside-Residence (PTCFOR) to licensed gun owners, have been also held in abeyance by PNP chief Arturo Lomibao.

Reyes also assured residents of Western Visayas that they will be "extremely prudent and professional' in the enforcement of Proclamation 1017.

He also ordered the augmentation of the manpower of police stations considered "high-risks" for attacks by lawless groups, especially the New People's Army.

He also reminded private security and detective agencies to strengthen the security of their armories.*GPB
