Guv to decide on Panaad
sportsfest budget
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The decision of Gov. Joseph Maraņon on the P200,000 proposed budget of the Provincial Sports and Development Office for the staging of the 2006 Panaad Sportsfest will be known on Monday, PSDO officer-in-charge Manuel De Oro said yesterday.

Maraņon will decide on the budget because the funding for the Panaad Sportsfest has, initially, not been included in the overall budget of the Panaad Festival, De Oro said.

The proposed P200,000 will be used to stage the athletics, boxing, taekwondo, Mambukal race, table tennis, chess and swimming hostilities of the event slated April 22 to May 1, he said.

The Panaad Sportsfest, which is expected to draw about 1,000 athletes from all over Negros Occidental, is being staged for the second time since it was stopped in 2004 because the provincial government lacked a budget, he added.

Meanwhile, De Oro said that the PSDO is also still waiting for the approval of its proposed budget of P60,000 for the 2006 provincial mass-based sports program.

The amount will be used for the swimming, athletics and boxing programs of the PSDO in the different cities and towns in Negros for this year, he said.

De Oro said he is also pushing for the inclusion of table tennis and taekwondo in the mass-based sports project because these disciplines are easy to organize since they are individual events.

PSDO launched its boxing, swimming and athletics programs in the cities of Kabankalan, Bago, Sagay, Escalante and Talisay and in Ilog town last year.*CIT
