COLLEGE BASKETBALL
West Negros shocks
reigning champ UPH
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Sweet revenge.

West Negros College turned back defending champion University of Perpetual Help Altas, 62-58, yesterday for its first win in the 60th National Students Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championships at the ICR Gym in Bicol.

It was actually payback for the Mustangs, who saw their title bid in the same tournament last year in Dumaguete City end, following a quarterfinal loss to the Altas.

But West Negros showed up UPH yesterday, underscoring its dominance in the shaded lane and in the backcourt. Unlike its quarterfinal meeting last year in Tanjay, the Mustangs never trailed in yesterday's game.

Two more quarterfinal encounters are set tomorrow with Bracket B No. 3 BBC colliding with sixth-ranked Tangub, before Summit-AMG tackles Davies-Republic Hardware.

NBA to finalize teams
vying in Mayor's Cup

Officials of the Negros Basketball Association have agreed to finalize the number of participating squads in the NBA-Mayor's Cup Summer Basketball Tournament next week during a meeting yesterday at the Dodong's Fastbreak Restaurant of Bascon Hotel in Bacolod City.

NBA president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon said the number of competing teams will be finalized next week when West Negros College returns from its stint in the 60th National Students Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championships in Bicol.

Aside from WNC, possible squads that will vie for the crown are defending champion Your Basketball Athletic Club-Emarken, Ceres Liners and Toyota-Iloilo, Bascon said.
