Vice governors
support Arroyo
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Vice Governors League of the Philippines has thrown its support to the "state of national emergency" declaration made by President Gloria Arroyo.

Oriental Negros Vice Gov. Jose Petit Baldado said the President has all the basis for declaring Proclamation 1017, citing reports from the intelligence community about threats to national security.

From the layman's point of view, it may not be necessary, Baldado said.

The problem, however, is whether the President can sustain her declaration without being to taking a more serious action.

"Let us give the President the benefit of the doubt," Baldado said as he urged the people to be vigilant against possible abuses by its implementors.

Baldado cited the arrest of two lawmakers who were marching on the streets, as well as insinuations about or crackdown on media outlets critical of the administration.

Baldado said he personally believes that the declaration of state of national emergency will only agitate more problems.

"In the past, Arroyo had weathered several destabilization moves and has proven herself to be a strong President. Taking drastic actions might precipitate something more dangerous to the government," Baldado said.*JG
