Metro Dumaguete concept
creating transport impasse
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Metro Dumaguete concept may have to be reviewed because a public transport impasse may cause its break-up.

The 62 tourist certified drivers from Dumaguete City have been barred from entering the Municipality of Bacong, and they have aired a complaint to the Provincial Tourism Office and to the Office of the Governor.

City Traffic Management Office operations officer Danilo Atillo said the city will have to review an existing memorandum of agreement between Bacong and Dumaguete that allows 50 motorcabs from Bacong to enter the city and vice versa.

Tourist certified drivers probably believe the action of Bacong Mayor Rodolfo Yee is in retaliation to a city ordinance prohibiting public utility jeepneys from the south to enter the central district of the city, including the motorcabs for hire from Bacong.

At present, motorcabs for hire from Bacong are allowed to enter up to barangay Calindagan, Dumaguete City, while PUBs coming from Bacong can also enter the city up to barangayTabuctubig. Atillo said there is no problem with regards to northbound transport coming from Sibulan town, where motorcabs numbering from 1 to 100 were allowed entry to the city proper and vice versa.*JG
