A Bacolod Councilor yesterday expressed his support for Bacolod police director, Senior Supt. Pedro Merced, who is being maligned through graffiti seen on Bacolod City walls.

Markings on the wall along B.S. Aquino Drive said "Merced kawatan (Merced is a thief)" and another in Brgy. 39 said "Merced hari sg mga kawatan (Merced king of thieves)."

Bacolod Councilor Al Victor Espino, who chairs the Committee on Police, Security and Jail Management, said his committee is reiterating its confidence in the character of Merced. "I believe the attacks on his person are unfair and uncalled for," he said.

Merced said he believes the acts were done by a coward. "If they believe I have done something wrong, they should file a case in court rather then judge me in public. If they have evidences against me, let them prove it in court and I am willing to go to jail if they could prove it," he said.

Meanwhile, Espino said he has not been informed that the services of Merced will end by July 30. "I have full trust and confidence in him and I believe in his capacity," he said.

Asked for his reaction, Merced said it is not a problem since he is not married to his position as police chief. If his services are not needed, he is willing to go, he said.

"But as long as I have the trust and confidence of the Mayor and the people of Bacolod I will continue to serve," he added.*CGS
