Traces of ashfall
hits Canlaon City
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Traces of ash fall from Kanlaon Volcano that continued to spew steam yesterday were found in Canlaon City, Oriental Negros.

Science research analyst Ben Tanatan of PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon spewed voluminous grayish steam 1.5 kilometers above the summit that drifted to the south west from 5:06 to 5:20 a.m. yesterday.

At 5:21 to 6:20 a.m., voluminous white to dirty white steam 800 to 1,000 meters was also spewed by Kanlaon, but by 6:21 a.m. the summit was obscured by cloud cover that barred further monitoring of emissions, he said.

Traces of ashfall were found in Canlaon City on Thursday, he said. "No volcanic earthquakes preceded the steam emissions indicating no magma intrusion, a PHIVOLCS advisory said.

Alert Level 1 remains over Kanlaon to prevent trekkers from entering the four kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone until further notice.

PHIVOLCS has warned that Kanlaon has entered into a period of low level unrest that could intensify should sudden steam and ash explosions occur and generate hazardous volcanic flow.

It reminded disaster coordinating councils of towns and cities around the volcano to take the necessary precautionary measures.*CPG
