Rotary backs
malnutrition drive of city

The campaign of the Dumaguete City government to reduce malnutrition got a boost recently in the form of P320,000 in assistance from the Rotary Club of Dumaguete East.

Raymund Mercado, RCDE president, and fellow officials turned over the check to Mayor Agustin Perdices and Vice Mayor William Ablong during a ceremony at Quezon Park at the launching of the city's supplemental feeding program.

Aside from city officers, also present were officials of the city's 30 barangays. The city nutrition office headed by Lourdes Taburaza handles the supplemental feeding program.

Mercado, incoming assistant governor of Zone 3D of the Rotary Clubs of Oriental Negros and Siquijor for 2006-2007, said Dumaguete was the first among other cities and towns in the province that would benefit from their campaign to help reduce malnutrition.

He said they are currently identifying other local government units in Oriental Negros that have high malnutrition rates.

Mercado said the club was particularly interested in promoting supplemental nutrition through the feeding program to reduce malnutrition.

The Rotary Club of Dumaguete East has been active in its community services, particularly during the presidency of Mercado and has received awards for its services to the community.*
