Rape victim from Negros
badly beaten in S. Korea
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The Negrense woman who was allegedly raped in South Korea had suffered from such a brutal beating that her jaw was fractured and she survived only when she played dead and was stuffed in a large culvert pipe by her attacker.

This was disclosed yesterday by the parents of the 30-year-old Hinigaranon, whose name is being withheld by the DAILY STAR, who said she was attacked and raped at about 9:30 p.m. on July 2 and remains in a hospital in South Korea.

She also sustained wounds in her ears, lost three teeth, was boxed in the stomach that caused swelling, while her arms bore rope marks and her legs had injuries, her father said. Even my daughter could not believe that she would survive what happened to her, which lasted from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., the father said.

She told her parents she does not want to return home because she wants to ensure that she gets justice for what happened to her.

Her parents said they are sending two of their children to Korea to help care for the victim as she is still confined at a hospital there.

The victim, according to her Korean doctors, may have to stay in the hospital for one and a half to two months. With the help of Board Member Francis Gerard Tuvilla her parents yesterday met with Gov. Joseph Maraņon who promised to assist in the transportation of the victim's siblings to go to Korea.

The governor has committed to give one ticket while Hinigaran Mayor Caroll Guanco will supply with the other ticket, Tuvilla said.

Tuvilla said Rep. Ignacio Arroyo (Negros Occ., 5th District) has assured that he will provide accommodations for the siblings in South Korea. A report from the office of Arroyo said Overseas Workers Welfare Administrator Marianito Roque has directed an OWWA officer to attend to the Hinigaran resident's case, and is currently coordinating with the police in Korea.

An operation was performed on the victim's jaw on Friday and her employer was providing necessary assistance, the report from Arroyo's office also said.

The father said his daughter, who is a teacher, went abroad to work to help her family.

She worked for three years in Taiwan and has been working in Korea in a vehicle spare parts factory for almost a year.

His daughter was raped on July 2 when she went out to buy pedal pushers to wear on her birthday on July 4, the father said.

The father said they are very thankful to all the officials who have helped them, citing Tuvilla, Maraņon and Arroyo.*CPG
