WV Prisaa budget
woes solved: Jaruda

The lack of funding for the Western Visayas' campaign in the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games in Pangasinan has already been solved, Fr. Emilio Jaruda, president of the WV PRISAA, said yesterday.

The Western Visayas athletes and delegation officials can now focus on their training because they do not have to worry anymore about the budget, Jaruda told the DAILY STAR.

Six PRISAA member-schools from Iloilo, Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association, and Iloilo PRISAA will shoulder the P600,000 lacking from the P1.7 million budget, he said.

NOTAFA age-group
event to draw 500 athletes

About 500 athletes in the elementary and secondary levels are expected to compete in the revival of the Negros Occidental Track and Field Association Age-Group Athletics Competition on Feb. 25 at the Escalante Central School Oval in Escalante City.

"I think that this would be the maximum number of participants (500) because the athletes will shoulder their own transportation expenses," NOTAFA president Roger Banzuela said.

Banzuela said the NOTAFA is reviving the event because athletics in Negros have been deteriorating and the Negrenses have fallen behind Iloilo in the collegiate level.

SJI cagers pace aspirants' tilt

St. John's Institute trounced different opponents over the weekend to lead the NOPSSCEA aspirants boys' basketball tournament at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Gym in Bacolod City.

The SJI dribblers routed Bacolod Christian Education Center School, 67-31, Saturday, before trampling St. Augustine International School, 71-53, Sunday to pace the tournament with a 3-0 slate.

Raymund Lacson and Mark Alvin Uy canned 24 points each against SAIS to topscore for St. John's. Leading the offense of St. Augustine was Mark Arsenal as he exploded for 30 points, while Joel Padilla poured in 19 markers.
