Vendors' Plaza groomed
to become model market

The Bacolod City government would like to put order in the markets and now is the chance to come up with a major market in the city that is properly managed, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said yesterday.

Leonardia said the assessment of the Vendor's Plaza was done way before and it is on record that the markets are being subsidized by the city. "So this our chance to come up with a major market in the city that is properly managed," he said. If this endeavor becomes a success then we would like to make it a model for other markets, he added.

Bacolod to take part
in e-Services exhibit

Bacolod City will join other major cities and provinces in showcasing its products and services in the 6th e-Services Philippines Outsourcing Conference and Exhibition in EDSA Shangri-La Manila Feb. 16 to 17, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairman of the Bacolod Information Technology Focus Team, said yesterday.

The event will also be participated in by the local governments of Bataan, Bohol, Bulacan, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Leyte, Zamboanga, Pangasinan and Naga, she said.

These local government units will join the presentation of regional IT hubs, that will focus on real estate availability, telecommunications, infrastructure and human resource, during the forum on Feb. 17, she also said.

RP economy grows
5.1 percent: NEDA

MANILA - Weak farm output and high oil prices capped Philippine economic growth at 5.1 percent in 2005, officials said yesterday, just below the government's target of 5.3 percent growth.

But the figure was better than most private sector forecasts of below five percent and President Gloria Arroyo's government expects GDP to meet its earlier forecast of between 5.7 and 6.3 percent growth this year, they added.

The agriculture sector, which employs nearly four in 10 Filipinos, "moderately expanded" by 2.0 percent last year due to the "tempered growth of crops, restrained growth of livestock and weak poultry growth," Economic Planning Secretary Augusto Santos told a news conference.
