Gov. George Arnaiz said he is studying an offer by Dr. Aparicio
Mequi, former Philippine sports commissioner and presently the dean
of the Graduate School of Foundation University, to host next year's
Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros.
The offer was first made last year but Arnaiz declined because
of the continuing construction of the convention center project
beside the Perdices Memorial Coliseum.
Aside from the un-preparedness of province, the Sangguniang
Panlalawigan had to study the details of the proposal. But with
the construction in full swing and the center expected to be completed
and operational by the end of this year things could change.
The governor is optimistic the province is capable of hosting
major sports events once the facilities and accommodations are ready.
Arnaiz sees the Palaro as an opportunity to spur the province's
economy and tourism development program.
Dr. Mequi had earlier assured that if the province agrees to host
the national event, he would help put the province's athletes and
coaches on a one-year training.*RG
