CAFGU member shoots
Sta. Catalina man dead

A civilian died Sunday morning in Brgy. Mansagumayon in Sta. Catalina, Oriental Negros, when a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit shot him several times.

Police identified the victim as Joel Quimat, 48, married of Mansagumayon and the suspect as Jorie Caducoy, a CAFGU member of the 61st Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army/CAA Detachment.

Investigator SPO3 Leonardo Ramos, of the 705th Provincial Mobile Group, said before the incident Quimat and two companions were talking in the victim's house when Caducoy, believed to be under the influence of liquor and lugging an armalite rifle appeared.

The militiaman, without saying anything, approached them and fired at Quimat. One of the people near them tried to intervene but Caducoy stopped him, pointed his rifle into the fallen man and riddled the body with bullets.

After killing Quimat, Caducoy surrendered to his detachment commander in Caigangan and turned over the armalite and 7.62mm gun.

Police said the killing was triggered by a long-standing grudge between the two men.

Meanwhile, a former member of the defunct Civilian Home Defense Force was gunned down in his residence in Balili, Tubigon, Sibulan, late Tuesday night.

Responding police officers headed by Police Inspector Gregorio Ramos identified the victim as Lopercio Catubig, 53, married, who succumbed to several gunshot wounds in his body.

Initial investigations disclosed that the suspect used a homemade shot gun, based on evidence recovered from the crime scene. The Sibulan police is yet to determine the motive of the incident.*RG
