A talented mix of current and former University of St. La Salle standouts will don the Negros Occidental Football Association colors in the Visayas qualifying tournament of the Philippine Football Federation National Men's Senior Championship that takes centerstage at the Silliman University pitch on Jan. 27 in Dumaguete City.

Arnie Pasinabo, who saw action for the Philippine men's football team during the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, and former RP XI booters Ziggy Tonog and Bernard Rojas are expected to spearhead NOFA's campaign in the regional event.

Both Pasinabo and Rojas will play as midfielders-strikers, while the 33-year-old Tonog will be part of Negros' defense, NOFA coach Freddie Lazarito told the DAILY STAR.

Only 78 Negrense athletes
joining Nat'l Prisaa Games

Only 78 student-athletes from Negros will see action for the Western Visayas contingent in the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games that fires off on Feb. 3 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

University of St. La Salle will send 38 athletes, while 20 players will come from University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, WV PRISAA athletic manager Roger Banzuela told the DAILY STAR last night.

West Negros College will have 14 athletes as Riverside College and Visayan Maritime Academy will send five and one of its players, respectively, Banzuela, who also serves as the chairman of the Region VI PRISAA technical committee, said.

Duran elected SCOOP prexy

Renato "Boy" Duran of DYEZ-Aksyon Radyo was elected president of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines-Bacolod for 2006 at the Bascon Hotel in Bacolod City yesterday.

Also elected were Nida Buenafe of Negros Weekly - vice president, Cedelf Tupas of DAILY STAR - secretary, Elsie Jolingan of Sunshine Channel - treasurer, Dolores Epacta of Negros Weekly -- auditor and Christian Irl Tan of DAILY STAR -- business manager.

The Board of Directors for 2006 are Allen del Carmen -- STARLIFE magazine editor, former SCOOP president Eric Loretizo of DAILY STAR, Henceboy Cestina of DYKB-Radyo Ronda, Guillermo Tejida III of DAILY STAR and Mitchel Lipa of ABS-CBN.
