Only 78 Negrense athletes
joining Nat'l Prisaa Games

Only 78 student-athletes from Negros will see action for the Western Visayas contingent in the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games that fires off on Feb. 3 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

University of St. La Salle will send 38 athletes, while 20 players will come from University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, WV PRISAA athletic manager Roger Banzuela told the DAILY STAR last night.

West Negros College will have 14 athletes as Riverside College and Visayan Maritime Academy will send five and one of its players, respectively, Banzuela, who also serves as the chairman of the Region VI PRISAA technical committee, said.

A total of 196 student-athletes, including standouts from Aklan, Antique and Iloilo, will power Western Visayas' bid to retain its overall championship won in Zamboanga City last year.

Banzuela, who is also the USLS sports director, said 16 officials will accompany the Region VI players. The participating regions will be eyeing for the championships in softball, baseball, basketball, sepak takraw, lawn tennis, chess, swimming, table tennis, indoor volleyball, athletics, badminton and taekwondo.

Negros, which brought home the overall crown of the Regional PRISAA Games in Bacolod City last month, is set to represent Western Visayas in men's chess, basketball, lawn tennis and sepak takraw; women's taekwondo, swimming and volleyball, and men and women's table tennis.

The women's volleyball, swimming and taekwondo, and men's sepak takraw and lawn tennis teams will be represented by USLS, while Recoletos will banner the men and women's table tennis squads.

The Negros men's basketball team of Elvis Atinado is composed of WNC and UNO-R stalwarts. The men's chess squad is comprised of the WNC woodpushers as Recoletos will also have some of its swimmers in the Western Visayas women's swimming team.

Banzuela said the three Riverside standouts will compete in taekwondo, while the two others will see action in badminton, adding that the lone VMA athlete will be a member of the sepak takraw team.*CIT
